A Report On E-C Translation Of The Cambridge History Of The English Language Volume ?(Chapter 5.1-5.4)

The translation report narrates the E-C translation practice of section 1 to 4,chapter 5 of The Cambridge History of the English Language volume 3.A total of18625 words were selected from the English text;The contents include: the development history of early modern English(about 1450 to about 1700)and modern English(about 1700 to 1900),the general distribution,the classification of English variants,the formation of standard English and the origin of loanwords.Excerpted from The Cambridge History of the English Language Volume III,the source text provides its readers with a full and authoritative account of the history of Early Modern English.The main representatives of German functionalism are Reiss,Vermeer and Nord.The Skopos theory under functionalism consists of three rules,namely,the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.These three rules include three translation models: equivalence theory,compensatory theory and translation manipulation theory.Based on the translation theory and principles,this paper presents the translation methods used by the author.Among them,the equivalence theory is the conventional methods of translation,and the translation mode includes full equivalence,partial correspondence and synchronizing,while the compensatory theory is the alternative means of translation,which in turn includes compensation,splitting and recasting;adding and omitting;interpreting;blending or combing.By combining translation theory,principle and mode,the author can produce a smooth and readable translation.Under the guidance of Skopos theory and combining the translation principles and models of Reiss,Vermeer and Nord.The author tries to convey faithfully the information of the source text and its culture,whilst improve the readability of the translated version,thereby enabling its readers accessible to a deeper understanding of the history Early Modern English.
