The report is done based on the E-C translation. The source text Elephants and Kings:An Environmental History by Thomas R.Trautmann is documentary literature.Covering many fields such as environment, politics, military and culture, this book tells war elephants in India. Therefore,it is of high value to translate it.Chapter 7 is the excerpt for the present translation task under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory of Nida Eugene. The translation report mainly tells the difficulties in the translating and some translation techniques. As it is a documentary text,it is quite difficult to translate so many proper words and long complex sentences involved in different fields. In order to deal with the translation difficulties and to realize equivalence between the source text and the target text starting from Functional Equivalence Theory, many translation techniques are deliberately used, like transliteration, annotation, meaning selection, conversion, amplification, blending, following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structures.Based on being faithful to the source text and targeting the reader-oriented,translation applicability is analyzed through some specific cases from the documentary literature under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.A conclusion is also drawn from the translation and report.English and Chinese are different from each other in logic and expression,so it is necessary to use some translation techniques from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory in order to ensure the closest natural equivalence between the source text and the target text and to reach the similar effect between the source reader and the target reader.
