A Practice Report On The Translation Of Categories Of Chinese Literary Theories In The Early-Middle Ages (Chapter 1)

Chinese literary theory is an integral part of Chinese traditional culture.The translation of Chinese literary theory is conducive to disseminating Chinese culture and promoting cultural exchanges internationally.This report is about the Chinese-English translation of section 5,chapter one in Categories of Chinese Literary in the Early-Middle Ages.The source text contains many cultural-specific items mainly concerning the theoretical categories of Chinese literature,which leads to difficulties in finding their equivalents in the target language.After summary of the translation process and case analysis,this report focuses on how to make sufficient preliminary preparations and how to use strategies for culture-specific items in Chinese literary theory to deal with culture-specific items for the quality of translation following Skopos theory.This report consists of five chapters.The first three chapters illustrate the specific situation of the project,the preparations before translation,and the whole translation process respectively.In the fourth chapter,the translator briefly introduces Skopos theory,culture-specific items,and strategies for translating culture-specific items.Through specific case analysis by Skopos theory,this report gives a comprehensive analysis of the specific strategies for translating culture-specific items,including transliteration,literal translation,liberal translation,naturalization,deletion,intratextual gloss,absolute universalization and previous translation and canonization by the fidelity rule,the coherence rule and the Skopos rule.The conclusion of this report highlights that adequate preparation is the prerequisite for translating Chinese literary theory and the strategies for translating culture-specific items by Skopos theory are of great significance for the translation of Chinese literary theory.The translation of Chinese literary theory into English contributes to a clear and deeper understanding of Chinese literary theory among western readers,the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature,and the construction of Chinese literature discourses system.
