Yupian, compiled by Gu Yewang in Liang Dynasty(the third period of Southern Dynasties),is the most ancient dictionary of Chinese characters written in Kai style(a mainstream standard regular style)as found in existence. In Tang Dynasty,Sun Qiang expanded the collection and reduced the notes. The Tang version of Yupian was eventually formed and Gu's version was redefined as the original version.Subsequently, rework on the dictionary was carried out in Song Dynasty by Chen Pengnian and his coagents under the order of Emperor Zhenzong,as a result of which the Song version of Yupian, known as Daguangyihuiyupian,A Popular Edition, came into being and circulation up to present days. The above-mentioned three versions, with massive language materials, reveal the linguistic features across nearly 500 years and provide precious research examples for the studies of modern Chinese language and characters. At present, merely incomplete broken parts of the original version can be discovered and the Tang version remain lost.Only through quoted passages in other works can rough information be found. This thesis sets out to compare Longkanshoujing and Kehong Glossary, excerpted from Yupian respectively with the incomplete original version,Zhuanliwanxiangmingyi and Yupian,A Popular Edition from the aspects of shape, sound and meaning. On the basis of the results of the comparison,it intends to find out the answer to “which version of Yupian is the source of Longkanshoujing and Kehong Glossary” and more evidences to explain “based on which version of Yupian was Yupian,A Revised Edition produced”.The comparative research is conducted to identify the similarities and differences between the versions and proceed to demonstrate and conclude that “Longkanshoujing and Kehong Glossary did excerpt from the Tang version of Yupian”.Moreover, similarities and differences of shape, sound and meaning between the version Longkanshoujing and Kehong Glossary excerpted and Yupian,A Popular Edition are studied and further proof to “Yupian,A Revised Edition was based on the Song version” found.
