The text of this translation practice is selected from Ripples from the Zambezi written by Ernesto Sirolli. The selected part is primarily about the author's work experiences in Africa and Australia.Through his experiences, the author intends to tell us how to stimulate the development in backward areas. Therefore,in a sense, studying his work not only contributes to promoting social progress and development which is significant and practical for our society, but also helps to improve the translation ability and the cultural accomplishment of the translator, which is meaningful and necessary for herself. The application of communicative translation theory in Ripples from the Zambezi is mainly embodied in handling of translation difficulties and translation techniques. In line with different functions of the text,Newmark proposes three kinds of texts, namely, expressive text, informative text and vocative text.Newmark also advocates that different translation strategies should be applied in different text types and he proposes that communicative translation theory should be utilized in informative and vocative texts.Hence, according to Newmark's communicative translation theory, the book Ripples from the Zambezi belongs to an informative text, which is more suitable to the communicative translation theory as the guiding theory of translation practice. Therefore, under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory, this paper studies how to solve difficulties encountered in translation practice, and with this theory, the translator explores the proper translation techniques in informative texts, striving to accurately convey the information of the original text and make it clear and easy to understand in the target language.
