This is a report on an English–Chinese translation practice, the materials of which are from two legislative texts in the common law system, that is,U.S.Code(excerpt)and Sustainable Energy Act 2003.After a thorough analysis of the materials, the characteristics of them are found out and categorized at lexical level, syntactic level and discourse effect level.Strategically, the static equivalence theory is found to be the most suitable theory to guide the translation of such materials. Therefore, all the materials are translated from the perspective the static equivalence theory, and the result of its application is satisfactory. Some problem-solving examples in the translation process are also illustrated so as to explore the translation techniques from the perspective of the static equivalence theory.
