Xiong Shili is the main founder of modern Neo-Confucianism.He laid the main direction of the cosmology, ontology, mind theory and metaphysics of modern Neo-Confucianism by using the system of “ontology-cosmology” with“Xi-pi-cheng-bian” and “oneness between essence and application”.The formation of Xiong Shili thought cannot be separated from the absorption of Chinese Traditional scholarship, especially the philosophy of Zhouyi. This paper mainly explains Xiong Shili's absorption of “the Three Meanings of Yi” from the book of Yi Wei written by scholars in Han Dynasty, and the relationship between them. This paper develops by formation, meaning and development of the thought of “the Three Meanings of Yi” in Xiong Shili. The Chapter 1 explains the source of “the Three Meanings of Yi”,but he developed from Cosmology to “ontology-cosmology”.He used the relationship between “unchanged” and “change” to explain the relationship between substance and appearance, which is a unified whole. The Chapter 2 makes a certain explanation to Xiong Shili's “the Three Meanings of Yi” which not apart from “substance-function”.And “the Three Meanings of Yi” may be regarded as one of the foundations of“oneness between essence and application”.The Chapter 3 unfolds the thought of “the Three Meanings of Yi” in Xiong Shili.First of all,it shows that substance must manifest itself as appearance by “Xi-pi-cheng-bian”.And this part also explained the principle, content and the result of “change”.Secondly this part analysed the way of“embody substance by function”,considering Xiong Shili suggested two ways naming “function is not real” and “function is substance”.The last part explains the theory of practice from “unchanged” and “change”,which unified in “Yi jian”.
