This paper consists of five chapters. The introduction introduces the current research status, significance and corpus selection of synaesthesia research in Zhuangzi.According to the current research, only a small part of Mr.Fang Yong’s essay has studied Zhuangzi’s Synaesthesia, but there are still many synaesthetical texts, the characteristics and functions of Zhuangzi’s synaesthesia,The influence of synaesthesia on later literature is not mentioned in the article. In the aspect of research significance, this paper enriches the rhetoric study of Zhuangzi, further explores the literary value of Zhuangzi from the perspective of rhetoric,it also provides a feasible research idea for academic research on synaesthesia of other documents, and makes certain academic preparation for sketching out the development of synaesthesia in Chinese literature. In terms of corpus selection, this paper refers to Guoqingfan’s and Wang Xianqian’s Notes Collection of Zhuangzi,in order to grasp the meaning of the text accurately. The first chapter studies the definition and classification of synaesthesia.Synaesthesia has both psychological and literary meanings. The synaesthesia of psychology refers to the psychological phenomenon of feeling when one sense is stimulated and the other or several unstimulated senses.Literary synaesthesia is a rhetorical device that describes the sense of the other. In the aspect of classification, this paper introduces the concept of inner sense, and classifies synaesthesia into two categories: description between outer sense and inner sense. The synaesthesia of Zhuangzi is classified according to the feeling of the description object. In view of the particularity of Tao experience in Zhuangzi, this paper divides the inner sense of Zhuangzi into two kinds: general psychological experience and Tao experience. The second chapter studies the synaesthesia text in Zhuangzi. There are 37 descriptions using synaesthesia in Zhuangzi. There are four descriptions of visual synaesthesia,2 of them are described as psychological feelings and 2 of them are described in sound; There are 13 synaesthesia to describe sound,11 in visual description,1 in tactile description and 1 in internal description; There are 1 synaesthesia to describe smell in comprehensive physical sensation;1 synaesthesia to describe taste in visual description;1 synaesthesia to describe tactile sense in smell description; There are 15 synaesthesia to describe general psychological feeling,10 in visual description,4 in tactile description,1 in comprehensive experience description; There are 2 synaesthesia to describe Tao experience both in visual description. The third chapter studies the characteristics and functions of synaesthesia in Zhuangzi.First, compared with other works in Chinese literature,Zhuangzi’s synaesthesia is used earlier, more frequently and more kinds.Second, from the description of the object,Zhuangzi mainly describes the sound and inner experience.Third,in terms of the way of description,Zhuangzi does not pursue the artistic effect of fantasy, but uses the daily experience to describe,in order to make the language more accurate. The synaesthesia of Zhuangzi has three functions: one is to make the language expression of Zhuangzi more concise;the other is to make the unique experience perceived by the readers;and the third is to make the readers’ perception of the aesthetic object more intense and three-dimensional.The fourth chapter studies the influence of synaesthesia on literature in Zhuangzi.Zhuangzi has a profound influence on Chinese literature, and many literary works have directly or indirectly quoted Zhuangzi’s synaesthesia. Some of the original meaning of Zhuangzii is exactly the same, such as "Ting Ying"(listen dizzily),"Ying",the original meaning is light swaying, dim,it is the visual feeling,Zhuangzi use it to describe hearing. In this book, the meaning of "Ting Ying" is the confusion in mind.Later literature use the word in same way, such as Han Yu’s poem See Master Wen Chang to the North: "monks do not listen dizzily, his word is the water to dying man of thirst".Some of them are different from the meaning of Zhuangzi, such as "face like a dead wood and heart like cool ash",Zhuangzi used them to express the feeling who forgets the world and himself, while Dream of Red Mansions used it to describe Li Wan’s desperation of her husband’s death.
