Penglai, prefectural capital of Dengzhou in ancient times, has a long history and glorious culture. As one of the birthplaces of bronze civilization on the Jiaodong Peninsula, its bronze vessels play a significant role in the development of bronze civilization in ancient China. It is a crucial academic topic to make a further study on bronze vessels excavated in the place. From 1949 onwards,a lot of bronze vessels from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Warring States, which are collected in Dengzhou Museum now, were excavated in the place. These bronze vessels of Zhou Dynasty in Dengzhou Museum are mainly from tombs of Xinwangji,Liugezhuang,Zhanma zhangjia of Penglai, and also by purchasing and donation. They are utensils used for cooking, drinking, filling food and water, musical instruments, weapons, and vehicles. These bronze vessels were not only material reflect on the regional system and social life at the time, but also an important component of bronze vessels in China, which can provide significant archaeological evidences of regional bronze civilization in the ancient East. However, few scholars have thoroughly studied and analyzed the collection of bronze vessels in Dengzhou Museum.Although it is lack of textual records, based on classical texts and former scholars' works, the thesis will study the origins, styles, eras and culture factors of bronze vessels from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Warring States in Dengzhou Museum, and explore their development and changes of different connotation and regions. These bronze vessels are divided into four kinds: containers, musical instruments, weapons, and tools.According to the comprehensive characteristics of these bronze vessels,my study divides these bronze vessels into three periods and five stages. The first period includes the first and second stages, and it was the time of introduction and acceptance of Zhou dynasty's culture from the late Western Zhou dynasty to the early Spring and Autumn period. The second one includes the third and fourth stages, and it was the time of exchanging and blending during the middle Spring and Autumn period. The third includes the fifth stages, and it was the time of Qi culture during the early Waring States period.According to the components of culture, these bronze vessels can be divided into three groups. The first group followed the characteristics of that during the late Western Zhou dynasty, and was similar with that of Guanzhong and Luoyang during the Zhou dynasty.Although the second group was mainly had the characteristics of Zhou dynasty's culture,it was under the influence of Lai culture clearly, which showed the fusion between Zhou dynasty's culture and Lai culture. The third gorup mainly had the characteristics of Qi culture, which showed that the Qi culture had entered the Penglai area.My study shows that these bronze vessels reflect the Zhou Dynasty's eastward expansion and cultural changes of the regions.Studying from the cultural perspective,we can see that these bronze vessels mainly have the characteristics of the Zhou Dynasty's culture, but also contain the exchange factors between Zhou,Lai and Qi cultures. If we can make a further study on these bronze vessels in Dengzhou Museum,it will help us to fully understand the complex characteristics of Jiaodong regional culture, social structure, and bronze vessels civilization in the whole Shandong, and to establish the space frame and time scale of the change of bronze vessels in Shandong in Zhou, and to supplement and revise the history of bronze vessels in China, which has theoretical value and academic meaning to understanding the contribution of these vessels to the history of Chinese bronze civilization.
