Categorical perception is one of the most basic human cognitive processes.Categories can simplify the perception and processing of information when people process information, and classification can promote the understanding of the outside world things.Categorical perception effect refers to people in the process of categorical perception of stimulation between categories is more accurately than in categories, even if their differences are equal. In the theory of category perception, the mechanism of categorical perception has been a hot academic issue.Language label theory consider that category perception is basic on people's language lable acquisition, lable as a kind of unconscious automatic processing and classification of clues to help category perception. And Pure perception characteristics theory argues that category consciousness is a kind of pure consciousness phenomenon,is because of that nature or nurture long-term perceptual experience changed the mapping structure caused by sensory neurons.A large number of behavioral studies and cognitive neuroscience study language found that the impact of lables on categorical perception effect is very stable.Studies also found inconsistent results that language labels has no significant effects on categorical perception. So in this study,we explored the influence of language lable on categorical perception effect.By comparing the different impact of language lables and the self-reference in the process of category perception, allows us understand the relationship between language and thinking better. In this study,we hypothesized that language labls are just one of the factors of categorical perception effect, other social factors such as self-reference may also affect categorical perception. However we don't know much about the interaction of language lable and self-reference.Thus,we designed three experiments.1)Experiment 1:Applied a 2(lable learning level:high vs.low)x 2(category:within category vs.between category)x 2(view:left vs.right).We mixed design investigated categorical perception effect under different degrees of language label representations. The results showed that RVF-lateralized categorical perception effect occurred when subjects under high labels learning level, but not in low labels learning level. The results suggested the importance of level of representation language labels on perception effect.2)Experiment 2:Using the design of 2(self-reference:high vs.low)x 2(category:within category vs.between category)x 2(view:left vs.right).We investigate the category perception when subjects in different self-reference level,at the same time the language label representation is low with all the participants. It is found that when the self-reference level is high, the participants will show better category perception. And the category perception is week when the self-reference level is low.We also found that improve the self-reference level not only increases the mental differences between the categories, and blurs the mental differences within the category.3)Experiment 3:Using the design of 2(self-reference:high vs.low)x 2(category:within category vs.between category)x 2(view:left vs.right).We investigate that when the language label representation is high, how the self-reference level impact category perception. In such cases, the results held that significant discrepancy was not found among the impacts of the two different level of self-reference,and the RVF-lateralized categorical perception effect appeared. In conclusion,in this study we use the novel continuous gradient objects, reveal that RVF-lateralized categorical perception effect appears only when the language label representation is strong enough. And besides of language label,we verified the self-reference factors can also affect categorical perception, but its role is still relatively weak compared with language label. In a word, this study provides evidence for the Linguistic relativity theory,at the same time also suggested the possibility of other factors affect the categorical perception.
