The Effect Of Language Category And Parts Of Speech On Self-Reference Effect

Self reference effect is to point to that the memory effect of the information connected self is better than the other coding conditions. This paper discusses the self reference effect of English words and Chinese translate vocabulary of them and the effect of the language category and parts of speech on the SRE through the two experiments through the experiments by the native Chinese university students using the self-made experiment term word list.The word list of the experiment is from the English vocabulary outline of2011Chinese college entrance examination. The process is making the questionnaire using all of the adjectives and nouns and let the university students rate the familiar of the word with degree level5according to the guidance of the questionnaire. Then do the statistics of the questionnaire and repeatedly selected and assessed and eventually to choose111pair of adjectives and93pair of noun as the experimental term.The experiment consisted of a2(language category:Chinese words, English word) X3(processing methods:self coding, semantic coding, speech coding) X2(parts of speech:nouns, adjectives)mixed design. Among them, the language category is the between-subjects design; The parts of speech and the processing method are within-subjects design. The dependent variable is the hit rate, response time, R judgment rate, R judgment response time K judgment rate and K judgment response time.The present of the material, the reaction of the subjects and the collection of the data are done by the E-prime program on the computer. The results show that:(1) The self describe judgment task and the autobiographical memory task produced the same memory effect on the adjective materials.(2) The self reference effect is same between English materials and Chinese material.(3) The effect of memory on English material is better than Chinese materials.(4) The nouns and adjectives produced the same self reference effect.(5) The effect of memory on nouns is better than adjectives on the speech coding task.
