Stone Adze From Tenghualuo Site In Liangyungang,Jiangsu Province

Polished stoneware is the main tool for the ancient people in Neolithic age,the manufacture technique,usage,and function are important to understanding of the production mode and culture of prehistoric society.As the most well-preserved site in Lianyungang,the site of Tenghualuo provides a new horizon to study the cities of the Longshan culture period to Yueshi culture period.Most of the excavated materials are stone adzes.Some researches on these adzes can help us to comprehend the lifestyles and productions well of the ancient society.144 adzes of this site are selected as the research samples in this article.Mapping these adzes according to the original size before classification.Then choosing 15 stone adzes to do some particular studies.To confirm the function and updated usage of the blades,we use optical microscope and laser microscope to observe.All the results are considered to demonstrate the finally functions of the stone adzes.Besides of these,we also design simulated experiments,which includes cutting,disintegrating and planing,to provide the more precise evidences for the conclusions.Comparing these types of the adzes,some characteristics are found.We summarize these characteristics from 3 aspects.As we all know,different usages of adzes have totally different forms which cause the different wood handles on them.The second is trace.There are still some little different traces between the unearthed adzes and simulated adzes through the microscope observation.The third is the efficiency.Through the result of the experiment,we find that the smaller adzes have the best performance on the cutting.And the disintegrating adzes which have the cambered surfaces have the high efficiency than those who have the straight surfaces.The efficiency on planing adzes is depend on the burned woods.To sum up,the stone adzes of the Tenghualuo have the various forms.Some adzes are used to disintegrate,which always have the square cross-section,damaged blades and portrait traces on the blades surface.Those who are used to cut,usually have slanting blades and disorderly traces on the blades surface.The planing adzes are thinner than the other types.The huge scars in blades are rare and the top of the adzes usually have the regular portrait traces.By doing the stone research of the Tenghualuo,it is reasonable to believe that the artifacts standard is appear to this period.And this phenomenon also can increase the efficiency of the ancient people.
