Relationship Between Individual Modernization And Fertility Intention

Fertility intention is the desire of the reproductive activities.For thousands of years,Chinese traditional fertility values occupied a mainstream position in all reproductive activities.But in today,social economy has been high speed developmenting already.The development of social modernization also impact the traditional fertility values.Traditional social civilization and modem civilization blend in the individual shows a individual characteristic of traditionality and modernity.This kind of individual characteristics influence the fertility desire of the people.Because of traditional society and modern society takes expectation differences in the value of children,and because of the value of children is an important indicator of fertility intentions,this is a way to research how individual modernization affects fertility intentions is that research the influence of the children’s value to the fertility intentions.This study discussed the individual characteristics of traditionality and modernity influence on the fertility intentions,and further discussed the value of children in the intermediary role as well as the mechanism between the individual characteristics of traditionality and modernity and the fertility intentions.This study want to provide a theoretical basis whether individual modernization can improve fertility intentions.This study reviewed individual traditionality and modernity,fertility intentions and the value of children,using "the Multiple Mental Traditional Scale(adult version)","the Multiple Mental Modernity Scale(adult version)","Children’s Value Assessment Scale(youth version)" and "the Fertility Intention Questionnaire",the way of data analysis includes variance analysis,correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis,to explore the individual traditionality and modernity effects on fertility intentions of and its effect path.The results of the study are as follows:1.The individual traditional characteristics has significant positive correlation of the ideal number of children,the plan number of children and son preference of fertility intentions;has significant negative correlation of the time ready to marriage and the time ready to have a baby of fertility intentions,suggests that the more Individual traditional,the more ideal number of children,the more plan number of children,the more son preference of fertility intentions,the earlier time ready to marriage and have a baby.The individual modern characteristics has no significant relationship with the ideal number of children,the plan number of children,son preference,the time ready to marriage and the time ready to have a baby of fertility intentions.2.The individual traditional characteristics has significant positive correlation of each dimension the value of children.The individual traditional characteristics has stronger significant positive correlation of the utilitarian normative value of children than the correlation of the emotional value of children.The individual modernity has significant positive correlation of the emotional value of children,and has no significant correlation of the utilitarian normative value of children.3.The value of children has significant positive correlation of the ideal number of children,the plan number of children and son preference of fertility intentions;has significant negative correlation of the time ready to marriage and the time ready to have a baby of fertility intentions,suggests that the more valued children,the more ideal number of children,the more plan number of children,the more son preference of fertility intentions,the earlier time ready to marriage and have a baby.The utilitarian normative value of children and the emotional value of children show the same relationship between the value of children and fertility intentions.4.Hierarchical regression analysis showed that,utilitarian normative value of children is a partial mediator between the individual traditional characteristics and son preference,utilitarian normative value of children is a full mediator between the individual traditional characteristics and the plan number of children,utilitarian normative value of children is a full mediator between the individual traditional characteristics and the time ready to marriage.
