Since the1950 s,the study of impression management has gradually become one of the main research subjects in social psychology and occupational psychology.In recent years,the research of impression management in personnel evaluation and social interaction has become a hot research issue.The previous studies,for the traditional interpretation of impression management scores,from abroad,have shown that the high marks for impression management reflected deception,and that low marks in impression management reflected honesty;however,the latest findings showed that high marks for impression management reflected honesty,and low marks reflected cheating.This study is to investigate the relationship between impression management and honesty in Chinese cultural background,and therefore questionnaires and a behavior experiment as methods were used in this study to explore the relationship between the scores of the real situation of impression management and honesty.It is generally believed that people with religion could be more honest,and that honesty and belief may be related to personality traits,and therefore,under the control of the influence of religious beliefs variables,this study explores the relationships among impression management,personality,honesty and self-deception.The participants of the first part of study were 16-24 years old college students(including the Hui people with religion,the Baima Tibetan people with special beliefs,and the Han people who had no religious beliefs)the Impression Management Scale,the Big Five Personality Scale,the General Social Desirability Scale and a honesty measurement questionnaire were used to investigate,so that the participants reported their behavior in impression management and personality aspects by completing the scales and questionnaire.In this study,the relationships among impression management,honesty,agreeableness,responsibility,extraversion and self-deception were explored by using multiple regression analysis,the results: impression management and agreeableness,honesty,responsibility,extraversion,self-deception have significant correlation;agreeableness,honesty,responsibility,extraversion,self-deception has a direct impact upon impression management.The second part of the study is on the basis of research one,which screened and chose 124 participants who had higher scores on honesty,agreeableness and accountability and were 18-23 years of age,and these participants were divided into three groups: people with religious beliefs,people without religious beliefs,and people with special religious beliefs,with behavior experimental methods,designed with the scene with the real temptation to compare and analyze the relationship between impression management and honest,among participants with different beliefs.Results: under the control of the effect on religious beliefs variables,there is no significant difference among religious beliefs,honesty level and impression management level of college students,which shows the religious beliefs has no significant influence on students' honest level and impression management level.It shows that the high marks of impression management are related to deception,and the low marks of impression management are related to honesty.The results show that religious beliefs have no significant influence on the honesty level and the impression management level of college students.The high marks of impression management are related to cheating,and the low marks of impression management are related to honesty.The study results can be helpful for college students to make a reasonable impression management,and on the other hand for enterprises to select employees,and provide a reference for more accurate study of impression management in the future.
