Chinese calligraphy started the beginning of the 20 th century.In the 1920 s and 1930 s,the calligraphy has been a great development.It has become a brilliant pearl of the history of China's history and been shining bright light and modern font design has a reference.After the introduction of the western modern design ideas into China,the author based on the characteristics of Chinese characters to decorated and beautified the font based on the characteristics,so that it has had aesthetic,publicity and other functions,and had a pictorial,commercial characteristics of the font.Based on the concept of calligraphy,we can stretch the concept in the timeline,then the suitably decorative font can be called the calligraphy,from the Stone Age pottery symbol graphics to the spring and autumn period of the bird worm book,From the tile of the Han Dynasty to the artistic calligraphy of the 20 th century and the new media environment,font design can be called artistic calligraphy.The history of Chinese calligraphy is not only a history of writing,but also the history of a society,each historical stage of calligraphy has its strong characteristics of the times.From various periods of artistic calligraphy,we have a glimpse of different historical periods of special social background,ideology,aesthetic awareness,creative ideas and the impact of people's productive life.This paper will study the epochal character of Chinese calligraphy from four chapters,the first three chapters,according to the chronological order of the development and evolution of the artistic calligraphy longitudinal comb,chapter one expounds the concept of calligraphy and its origin;the second chapter expounds the development and evolution of calligraphy from spring and Autumn Period to the 1980 s,The paper also focuses on the calligraphy of the old Shanghai period of 20 th century,and the third chapter analyzes the new characteristics of calligraphy in the new historical period,which appears in the public view after the new identity of "typeface design",including the characteristics under the new media environment.The last chapter analyzes the carriers,creative tools and creative personnel in different periods,and explores the characteristics of the development of calligraphy and the regularity of its evolution.By analyzing the different forms of calligraphy with the development of the Times,it is concluded that the calligraphy has the characteristics of the times and the exuberant vitality embodied by it.This paper hopes that the research can provide some theoretical support and reference for the font designer and the general font enthusiasts.
