Based on the previous research on thick translation, this thesis attempts to point out the limitation of thick translation as a translation strategy from the perspective of"energy in language" and to discuss how translation strategies adopted in Pound's Shijing re-present emotion, beauty, atmosphere of the original to achieve "thickness"of translation.Since Appiah(2000)puts forward the term "thick translation" and defines it as"translation that seeks with its annotations and its accompanying glosses to locate the text in a rich cultural and linguistic context",many researches have been conducted on thick translation at home and abroad. Most of these researches are based on Appiah's definition of thick translation and hold that the addition of a large amount of paratexts is the most effective approach to thickness of translation. However, just as Hermans(2003)says,"a translation engulfed by footnotes, annotations, explications and digressions is not geared to be the validation of a particular mode of translation Too many annotations dwarf the actual translation",a large amount of paratexts make translation lengthy. In a case study of Pound's Shijing,a close and comparative reading between the original and its translation is conducted to discuss what translation strategies Pound adopts under the guidance of "energy in language" and how these strategies re-present emotion, beauty, atmosphere of the original to achieve "thickness" of translation. This research is hoped to improve people's understanding of thick translation and its translation strategy, and to shed light on translation strategies to achieve "thickness"of Confucian classics translationThe research findings go as follows:Pound holds that "energy in language" is the core and indestructible part of poetry. It can be regained by seeking equations for emotion, maintaining beauty and returning to the thing itself.Pound advocates to directly deal with the thing in clear and concise language instead of pompous, obscure words with too many subjective explanations and comments.Deconceptualization, defamiliarization and recreation are adopted in Pound's Shijing.Through the strategy of deconceptualization Pound precisely presents, juxtaposes and creates images with clear and concise words, conveying the original's emotion to the target readers.By adopting defamiliarization strategy on the level of sounding, forming and meaning,he preserves the musical quality, visual feature and deep meaning of the original and brings novelty to the target readers, which arouses their reading interest, prolongs reading process and helps them understand the original in a multi-dimensional way.Pound holds that Chinese culture represented by Confucian thought is an effective cure for the western social problems. The strategy of recreation helps convey the Oriental ancients' spirit and emotion, especially the Confucian thought,to the western modern readers.Through the strategies of deconceptualization, defamiliarization and recreation, the emotion, beauty and atmosphere embedded in Shijing are successfully conveyed to the target readers, and in this way "thickness" of translation is achieved.
