John Updike is an important writer in American literature history whose novels The Rabbit Tetralogy has great fame.The Rabbit Tetralogy is considered to be the novel review of American traditional and main-stream culture.Generally,the studies of The Rabbit Tetralogy are based on its profound theme,and among which the analysis on religion,marriage,sexual relations,female,history and ethics is numerous.Although people have debates about Updike's moral value and fictions,his extraordinary display of the middle class life view is universally acclaimed.Updike's dessection of this group make readers see the significance of growth.This essay is based on the close reading,as well as the methods of social and history criticism,cultural research,thematology and so on.The thesis includes the following parts:the first part provides a brief state of Updike,and the plot of The Rabbit Tetralogy,and initiation theme,and then gives a detailed review both at home and abroad.Part Two presents the development of American initiation story in order to find its connection with The Rabbit Tetralogy and to clarify the rationality of writing in the perspective of growing-up.The following two parts are the key points.Part Three analyzes further on The Rabbit Tetralogy's growing-up theme,including the reflection,mentor,initiation rituals,which mainly describes Harry and compares him with other characters.Part Four explains The Rabbit Tetralogy's narrative feature in detail and stresses its contribution to realistic fiction,and its transitional significance.Finally,it's the conclusion of the thesis.
