Memoir Translation From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

Nowadays,more and more readers would like to get to know a person and learn from his or her experience by reading memoirs.Based on The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life,Love,and Loss by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt,this report attempts to explore the translation methods of memoirs under Peter Newmark's communicative translation.By reading a battery of books about translation and with the help of corpus and bilingual dictionary,the author of this report translated the original text into Chinese and solved problems that occurred during the process.What lies beneath these problems is the stark distinction between the English and the Chinese.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces the original author and the context.Anderson and Gloria began their conversations through e-mails.The Rainbow Comes and Goes is a celebration of the profound and universal bond between a parent and the child,and a thoughtful reflection on life and love.Chapter Two is a literature review.The author of this report puts forward his own ideas.Chapter Three analyses the textual features and explains the theoretical basis.Many participles and cultural words occur in the original text and the communicative translation serves as the theoretical basis.Chapter Four discusses the main problems in the translating process and the corresponding solutions.Translationese can be avoided when the contextual situation is considered.Participles and parenthesis should be rearranged so that the translation can be logically correct.Also,the translation of cultural words can be easily understood by Chinese readers via free translation and annotation.Chapter Five concludes the report.The rendering can be smooth and clear by employing the communicative translation,and hence the translator of this report hopes to provide certain reference to the E-C translation of memoirs.
