As ecological and environmental problems frequently arise on a global scale nowadays, more and more people consider how to foster health and vitality for humans and nature through the construction of urban garden. The book Landscape Architecture Theory: An Ecological Approach probes into landscape design from an ecological perspective.Through reading this book, the readers will not only gain an initial understanding of landscape architecture theory but also know how to apply the theory to practical ecological designs. The translation material is the third chapter of the selected book. This chapter describes the basic consideration factors of geology and ecology, how landscape functions as well as how design changes influence landscape. The Chinese version of this book cannot be found in the market so far.So the translation of this book will be necessary, important and original.Translating this book can not only provide new design ideas for people in related fields but also promote the development of Chinese garden industry.Besides, this translation practice can also provide a term database for the translation of the rest of the book in the future. As a scientific text, the translation material of the report has both the features of scientific text and many specialized vocabularies relating to landscape architecture. Thus,on one hand, the translator should follow the translation principles of scientific text in the translation process:principles of objectivity, accuracy and so on;on the other hand, the translator needs to fully consider reader‘s ability to read and understand,in order to make sure that the translated text can be accepted by readers at different levels and with different needs.Nida‘s functional equivalence theory(Nida1986,2004)emphasizes that translation is to use the most appropriate, natural and equivalent language to reproduce the message of original text from semantics to style. That means reader's response of the target text should be approximately the same as that of the source text(???2008).Functional equivalence theory fits the translation need of the selected material,so the translator chooses it to guide the whole translation process.Through a detailed analysis on the translated text at lexical, syntactic and textual level, the report explores how to apply functional equivalence theory to the translation of the selected text in order to achieve functional equivalence between the original text and the translated text. The report studies how the translator finishes the translation project in the course of preparing, translating and assessing. It expounds the difficulties the translator met and the inspiration the translator got in the translation process. It is proven that functional equivalence is an important translation theory to guide the translation of landscape architecture related texts.
