With the development of technology and economy,the traditional English teaching method is unsatisfactory in meeting students' demand for studying English.Besides,National English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017)states that “The information technology should be applied to the senior high English courses to enrich the curriculum resources.In this way,students have access to various multimodal discourses in written and verbal form,such as the text,pictures,songs and videos.” Although some English teachers have applied Powerpoint to assist teaching,problems still exist.The problems include that the coursewares contain only the text,or the teacher just reads the content on the PPT in class.So,teaching effects are not satisfying.Multimodal PPT refers to the courseware which is made of two or more than two symbols during teaching design.Systemic functional linguistics,input enhancement theory and constructivism theory are the theoretical basis of multimodal PPT.Multimodal PPT is a teaching tool that can be used in different types English classes.Applying multimodal PPT to teaching makes the class more interesting.It is also more clear to transmit the knowledge by applying multimodal PPT.Based on previous relative studies,this study applies multimodal PPT to senior high school English teaching,which aims at exploring the effect of applying multimodal PPT to English teaching.This study tries to answer the following three questions:1)What effects does the application of multimodal PPT have on senior high students' English achievements?2)What are the influences of applying multimodal PPT to English teaching on students' participation in English class?3)What are the students' and teachers' opinions about applying multimodal PPT to senior high school English teaching?The study is conducted in X senior high school in Pulandian District.96 freshmen participate the study,who are from two parallel classes.These students are taught by the same teacher,who applies multimodal PPT and the traditional teaching method to the experimental class and the control class respectively.The experiment lasts for the whole semester.In the experiment,the tests,questionnaires and interview are used to collect data.SPSS(20.0)software is used to analyze the data result.The results show that: Firstly,teaching English with multimodal PPT is helpful to promote senior high students' English achievements.Students in these two classes get similar English achievements in the pre-test.After applying multimodal PPT to English teaching forthe whole semester,students' English achievements in the experimental class have improved,which are higher than that in the control class.Secondly,applying multimodal PPT has positive influence on students' participation.Compared with the students in the control class,in terms of the behavior participation,the students in the experimental class are more focused on teaching.They participate in the class activities more actively.In terms of the cognitive participation,they can apply deep studying strategy more frequently.As for the emotion participation,they have more positive emotions and less negative emotions in English class.Finally,students and English teachers in the senior high school show welcome attitude towards the application of multimodal PPT,because there are many advantages.Besides,they also put forward some suggestions.
