Critical thinking,as the indispensable part of high school students' thinking ability, influences most on students' English level. Therefore, the cultivation of students' critical thinking is still one of the important tasks in high school English teaching in China. However,in the practical teaching, the traditional method only pays attention to the teaching of knowledge, and ignores the cultivation of high school students' critical thinking.Since Howard Barrows first proposed Problem-based learning in 1969,more and more researchers have focused on the teaching mode of Problem-based learning and achieved related results.Nevertheless, the existing researches attach importance to the application of Problem-based learning in the teaching in higher education, and there are rare researches on the correlation between the teaching of high school English writing and students' critical thinking.Based on the previous studies, the thesis applies Problem-based learning to English writing teaching, and explores the correlation between that and the cultivation of students' critical thinking, and then tries to provide a feasible teaching mode. There are two research questions in this study:1.What is the current situation of the cultivation of high school students' critical thinking in the process of English writing? 2.What is the correlation between the teaching of high school English writing on Problem-based learning and the cultivation of students' critical thinking?Based on research questions mentioned above,88 students from two parallel classes of Grade 2 in No.1 High School of Gaizhou were selected as research participants.Class 18 is regarded as experimental class and class 19 is called control class. At first, questionnaires are conducted among all participants in pretest;English writing tests in both pretest and post-test and individual interview in post-test,then collect data, finally quantitative and qualitative analysis were held by using SPSS software.Through empirical research,it is concluded that in high school English writing, although they have already have certain critical thinking, the level of their critical thinking is not balanced and the overall level is average, and there is much room for cultivation. After applying Problem-based learning to the teaching of high school students' English writing,to a greater extent,it cultivates students' critical thinking, furthermore, they have more evident critical thinking disposition, which is manifested in the self-confidence,truth-seeking,analysis and justice. In a word, the teaching of high school English writing on Problem-based learning is able to cultivate high school students' critical thinking, what's more,it has a positive correlation with the cultivation of students' critical thinking.
