The research object of this paper is the plays of Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting at Columbia University in the City of New York from 2013 to 2019.Columbia University is located in New York City,which is known as the three major theatre capitals of Western countries.It is part of the Manhattan peninsula,just like the many theaters in Broadway.As one of the Ivy League schools,Columbia University is equipped with powerful teaching resources.The current three professional teachers at Columbia University are the winners of the best playwright of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama,Tony Award and Obie Awards.The unique location and strong faculty make the students studying at Columbia University enjoy a strong theater and drama atmosphere.From the selection characteristics of the student plays,the style of creation,and the one-year interview experience of the author,this paper aims to explore the style of student plays in Columbia University and the reasons for its formation.And this paper attempts to explore two issues: How does Columbia University's students creation style form under the education of the college and the mechanism of the mainstream American theatre environment? And what implications does this have for Chinese playwright teaching practice? Mainly from four chapters of playwriting specialty to clarify:In the intoduction chapter,the research background and purpose of this paper are first expounded,and the overall appearance of the group of students at Columbia University is introduced;In the first chapter,the characteristics of the selection material of students' plays are summarized,and the psychological orientation of students' plays selection material is studied;In the second chapter,the characteristics of Columbia University's student playwriting techniques are mainly explored from the aspects of structure,technique,style and others;In the third chapter,I attempt to analyze the reasons for the formation of drama style of the students of Columbia University,starting from the theory of "Knowledge Field",and combining the American contemporary theatre overview with the teaching views and teaching views of Columbia University teachers.It is concluded that the drama style of the students of Columbia University tends to cater to the mainstream aesthetics of American contemporary theatre,and to some extent there is a generality and unity that deviates from Columbia University's "diversified" teaching philosophy.On this basis,this paper further explores the enlightenment of Columbia University's student creation style and its formation on today's Chinese playwriting teaching.
