As an important part of teacher discourse,teachers'verbal feedback plays a very important role in promoting comprehensible input and output for students.In addition,it is beneficial for maintaining and improving the classroom interaction between teachers and students.Therefore,it is necessary to research the similarities and differences of verbal feedback between expert and novice English teachers in senior high school.Six English teachers from Qin an No.2 Senior High School,Gansu Province were chosen as research subjects.The research aims to solve three problems:Firstly,what are the similarities and differences between novice and expert English teachers' verbal feedback amount?Secondly,what are the similarities and differences between novice and expert English teachers' verbal feedback types?Thirdly,what are expert and novice English teachers' understanding about feedback and teachers' timing of feedback?Based on classroom observation,audio recording and interview,using SPSS 17.0 to analyze the data,the author draws the following conclusions:First,as for the amount of feedback,expert English teachers'feedback amount is more than that of novice English teachers.Second,as for feedback types,in terms of content feedback,form feedback,and theme feedback,both expert and novice English teachers tend to use more content feedback.In addition to this,there are significant differences in the specific aspects of each type.Third,in the understanding of teachers'feedback,expert English teachers have a through and deeper understanding of the role and function of feedback;in the timing of feedback,expert English teachers can choose the timing of feedback flexibly and comprehensively according to different students;While novice teachers are more likely to use immediate feedback.In addition,there are four inspirations:First,expert and novice English teachers should learn more theories about feedback and understand the importance of feedback deeply.Second,both expert and novice English teachers should increase the amount of feedback and enrich the type of feedback,especially for novice teachers.Third,each English teacher should study a set of feedback types which are suitable to their students.Fourth,teachers should learn from each other and make progress together.In short,it is hoped that English teachers,especially novice teachers,can pay more attention to classroom feedback and constantly improve and reflect on their feedback skills so as to promote more interaction between teachers and students.
