Applying Relevance Theory In Translation

This paper takes a translation project as an example to see the application of relevance theory in guiding translation practice.Relevance theory regards translation as the ostensive-inferential communication,emphasizing the context and striving for the optimal relevance,so as to convey the informative intention and communicative intention to the target readers.The source text is taken from Carey Gillam's Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer,Cancer and the Corruption of Science Chapters 8 and 9(Angst in Argentina and Uproar in Europe).The two chapters use Argentina and European countries as examples to reveal the popularity of Roundup,the efforts of victims and researchers,and the contradiction between the government and herbicide companies.The difficulties of translating informative texts are analyzed from the perspective of relevance theory,such as long and complex sentences,the application of rhetoric and lexical metaphor.Through the translation cases study,the guiding significance of relevance theory to informative texts is discussed.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction of the influence of Relevance Theory and the key.The second chapter is about the development of relevance theory and its core claims.The third chapter focuses on how to use the theory to solve the difficulties of words and sentences translation through case studies.The fourth chapter summarizes the application of relevance theory to guide the translation process and lessons the translator has gained.
