A Study Of Interpretation Strategies At Press Conferences From The Perspective Of The Relevance Theory

As an essential activity to elaborate on the government's crucial policies,press conferences during NPC(National People's Congress)and CPPCC(Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference)sessions held in March every year have a strong political and authoritative character.Among them,the Prime Minister's answers to journalists' questions are more representative,and contents involved are incredibly comprehensive,attracting worldwide attention.Therefore,the interpreter's interpretation is not only relevant to the smooth progress of conferences but also represents the prestige of the government.The relevance theory believes that people will spare no effort to obtain the maximum cognitive effect with the least effort.It includes three aspects: the principle of optimal relevance,ostensive-inferential model,and contextuality of relevance theory.Through a great deal of investigation and research on relevant literature,the author found that in order to achieve the communicative goal better,interpreters frequently use the following five interpreting strategies: explanatory interpretation,corresponding interpretation,restructuring,omission,literal interpretation.These five strategies have a close relationship with the relevance theory.The author can further validate their close relationships by combining these five strategies and using case analysis methods to analyze the prime minister's answers to journalists' questions during NPC and CPPCC sessions.In terms of the analysis of specific cases,it is found that the relevance theory has an instructive role in interpretation.Under the guidance of relevance theory,the interpreter can infer the real intention of the speaker through interpreter's cognitive background,and after that choose appropriate strategies,and convey the process information to the audience,so that the audience can appreciate the meaning of the speaker with the least effort and achieve the best relevance.
