Since the 1980 s,children's literature research has enjoyed a stable growth, and has become a thriving academic area with diverse trends.More attention has been paid to children's literature translation by academic circles of both domestic translation and children's literature research. Moreover, these scholars mainly focus on such certain periods as the early Republic of China and the May Fourth Period, and yet pay little attention to the 17 years(1949-1966).This thesis analyzes and summarizes the translational norms and translation strategies that are applied in the translation during 17 years of American children's literature from the perspective of Toury's translational norms through the integration of documentary arrangement method, careful textual reading, and descriptive method by the case study of Chen Bochui's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.The paper points out that American children's literature translation of this period complied with the evaluation criterion of art and literature, namely “political criterion first, art and literary criterion second”.Translators usually chose to translate critical realism works revealing the hypocrisy and evil of capitalist society and enriching in educational meaning and entertainment to strengthen the weakness of Chinese children's literature and provide more extra-curricular reading materials for children in that period. When translating The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,Chen Bochui gives full consideration to adequacy and acceptability of the translated works by means of simple words, short sentences and paragraphs,as well as reduplicated words, onomatopoeia, repetition, rhythm and rhyme, interjection, and combination of characters and pictures to make the text interesting and favorable to reading, which conforms to the children's reading psychology and habits. The thesis aims to provide an example for the application of Toury's translational norms in the children's literature translation, and reference for the translation history study on children's literature translation, conducive to exploring the nature and norms of translation in specific historical context as well as Chen Bochui's understanding and translation of children's literature.
