This is an E-C translation report for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is a children’s book written by American writer Frank Baum. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a story about a little girl named Dorothy who was taken by an accident to a magical land Oz, and tried hard to find her way home. There, she gradually became acquainted with the Scarecrow without brain, the Tin Woodman without heart, and the cowardly Lion. In order to achieve their desires, they got through many troubles. During their journey, they met with many kind-hearted persons, and with their help, they managed to realize their dreams eventually by their intelligence and lived a happy life. The book is very popular among children with simple language and charming plot.The translation is under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics. The Reception Aesthetics was put forward and further developed by German theorists Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser from University of Constance. The four main ideas of Reception Aesthetics are:Role of Readers, Horizon of Expectations, Aesthetic Distance, and Indeterminacy of the Text. Under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics, the thesis discusses the strategies of the translation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the aspects of words, sentences and rhetoric.Under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics, the author of the thesis tries to focus on the children’s reading needs. In words level, the author of the thesis uses a large number of onomatopoetic words, reduplicated words, interjections, r-colored words and oral verbs to make it interesting; In sentences level, the author of the thesis divides long sentences into several simple sentences, uses such strategies as conversion of part of speech, conversion from passive voice to active voice and so on to make it in line with the Chinese expressions and meet the reading needs of children; In rhetoric level, the author of the thesis uses simile, rhyme, and parallel construction to make it as far as possible reflect the original style of ornament and can bring pleasure to children’s artistic sense.The report aims to, with examples of translation practice, under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics, analyze the translation strategies of children’s literature, and summarize the methods for the E-C translation of children’s literature. It is hoped that this report can provide some beneficial value for the E-C translation of children’s literature.
