A Translation Report Of Sarah Dessen'S Literary Work The Truth About Forever (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

The source text of the translation report is selected from chapters 1 to 6 of American writer Sarah Desson's novel The Truth About Forever.The author of this book tells a story of how a female college student rewrites her destiny to regain her confidence of life after coming across setbacks.The plot is vivid,the feeling is abundant,and the writing style fits real life.The translation of the excerpts is gradually improved under the guidance of the supervisor and guided by Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.Based on the understanding,analysis and translation of the selected text,the translator reproduces the connotation of the source language from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.At lexical level,the translator uses translation methods such as amplification,omission,and conversion to deal with the translation in order to make the translated text more fluent and get a closer meaning with the original text.At the syntactic level,the translator retains the original structure which is necessary,and at the same time uses translation methods such as negation,division,and conversion to cope with sentences,making sentence structure more authentic.At the textual level,the translator mainly analyzes the translation from the two aspects of cohesion and coherence,focusing on them in both English and Chinese.The translator hopes to achieve the functional equivalence between original text and target text.Finally,the translator hopes the translation task could provide some experience and reference for such kind of translation in the future.This report has five parts.The first part primarily introduces the source text,the author and the translation task.The second part focuses on the Functional Equivalence Theory and its principles,and the guiding significance of the theory to the translation task.The third part generally summarizes the whole process of translation task.And the fourth part goes case analysis about theory application,which is the main body of the report,mainly exploring how to apply Functional Equivalence Theory,how to apply corresponding translation methods in the translation process,and how the use of such translation methods achieves some effects as well.The fifth part is the summary and reflection.
