The New English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School promulgated in 2018 points out that China's ordinary high school education should attach great importance to the cultivation of students' core competency in English disciplines,and its' educational goal is to promote students' comprehensive and individualized development.Students' core competency refers to their language ability,cultural character,thinking quality and learning ability,which requires high school English teaching to develop and enlighten students' multiple intelligences.Therefore,the instructional designs and teaching modes corresponding to the cultivation of students' multiple abilities have also been extensively tried in English classroom.These attempts focus on the cultivation of students' comprehensive abilities,the mobilization of students' multiple intelligences,and the center position of students in language teaching,rather than only focusing on the teaching of language knowledge and the recording of learning points.The theory of multiple intelligences was put forward by Gardner in 1983.In his book Frame of Mind: Multiple Intelligences Theory,he mentions seven kinds of intelligence: linguistic intelligence,logical-mathematical intelligence,visual-spatial intelligence,bodily-kinesthetic intelligence,musical intelligence,interpersonal intelligence,and intrapersonal intelligence,which were later supplemented by natural intelligence.He thinks that everyone has the above eight kinds of intelligence,but the level of each intelligence is different.When applying this theory to education,researchers focus on the development of individual multiple intelligences,respect the individual differences of students,and emphasize that teachers should design teaching according to the characteristics of students' intelligence development in classroom construction.The above-mentioned core competences emphasized in the English teaching reforming of senior high school in China,to a large extent,have integrated the development of multiple intelligences throughout the process of listening,speaking,reading and writing in English teaching,highlighting students' pragmatic competence.Therefore,it is of great significance to combine the theory of multiple intelligences with the current English teaching reform in senior high school,and to explore the teaching designs of various English courses.This study attempts to make a case study of a class in one senior high school,to explore the application of Multiple Intelligences theory in English reading teaching in senior high school,and to find feasible teaching plans for English reading in senior high school.On the basis of studying the theory of multiple intelligences,the author conducts a three-month practical English reading teaching experiment.The research is developed at the sequence of the following three questions: First,what is the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high school under the guidance of Multiple Intelligences theory? Second,how to design English reading teaching under the guidance of Multiple Intelligences theory? Third,what is the effect of English reading teaching under the guidance of Multiple Intelligences theory on students' reading learning? The experiment is conducted in class 12 of second grade in that school.The subjects were 30 students in the class.Data are collected from questionnaire,classroom observation and interview.The research consists of five chapters.The first chapter presents the background,significance and structures of the thesis.The second chapter extends the literature review,expounding the theoretical basis,definitions,features and related researches of English reading teaching under the guidance of the Multiple Intelligences theory.The third chapter is the methodology,including the research questions,research instruments,research procedures,the methods for data collection and analysis during the research.The fourth chapter presents the results and discussion of the research,exploring the teaching designs of English reading under the guidance of Multiple Intelligences theory,and summarizing the impact of the teaching designs on students.The fifth chapter is a conclusion of the whole thesis,including the limitations of the study and suggestions for subsequent researches.The results indicate that the application of Multiple Intelligences theory in English reading teaching works significantly,which makes up for the deficiencies of traditional English reading teaching in the cultivation of students' ability and the improvement of students' interest in English learning.The teaching designs of English reading based on MI theory meets the needs of the development of individual intelligence,improves the learners' classroom participation and cultivates their linguistic competence.In this paper,the author tries to find new pattern which is more suitable for English reading teaching,and to provide reference as well as make contributions for further research in this field.However,there are still many shortcomings to be overcome and there is still a long way to go for the researchers in this field.
