| The cultivation of reading ability is one of the main objectives of English learning for college students,the purpose and means for college students to learn English,and the basis for the development of other language skills for English learners.The poor effect of teachers’ reading teaching mode may be one of the reasons why non-English majors in independent colleges can’t learn English well.Thus,how to improve the teaching effect of college English reading has become one of the key issues in English teaching research.With the advancement of English teaching reform,more and more teachers pay attention to the teaching method of reading based on the theory of multiple intelligences.Therefore,the author intends to apply the theory of multiple intelligences to college English reading teaching by means of empirical research,and explores the applicability of MIT(Multiple Intelligences Theory)and its impacts on the different levels of students in the class.This research aims to resolve the following three questions:1.How does the application of MIT in college English reading teaching improve students’ English reading proficiency?2.How does English reading teaching based on MIT affect the different levels of students? On which level is the impact most significant?3.How does the application of MIT in college English reading teaching stimulate students’ interest in learning English?The research subjects were 40 students of class 45 majoring in mathematics and applied mathematics from Lijiang College of Guangxi Normal University.According to the students’ pre-test scores,the research subjects were divided into three levels,including Level A,Level B and Level C.Meanwhile,the proportion of level A,level B and level C in the class was 1/4,1/2 and 1/4 respectively.After completing the grouping,the author adopted the MIT-based English reading teaching method,and conducted the classroom teaching experiment for one semester.Finally,data were collected by the means of classroom observation,English reading tests and interview,and analyzed by software SPSS 20.0.The teaching experiment results and the data analysis prove that the MIT plays an important role in guiding college English teaching activities.The MIT also provides theoretical guidance for college English teachers.On the basis of the MIT,college teachers can design the corresponding classroom activities based on the distribution of students’ intelligences.Once the students’ enthusiasm to participate in the classroom activities ispromoted,their self-confidence is improved and they can make great progress in their academic performance.The research results show that the reading activities based on the theory of multiple intelligences can stimulate the non-English majors’ interest in learning English and improve their English reading proficiency.Besides,by comparing the results of the three levels of students in the experimental class,it has been found that the students in Level C made the greatest progress,followed by the students in level B,and finally the students in level A.Finally,in the last chapter of the thesis,the author puts forward corresponding suggestions for teachers and students respectively,presents the limitations of this study and the direction for further research. |
