A Stady On "Lv Ye Xian Zong"

"Lv Ye Xian Zong" is a saga serial novel written by Li Baichuan in the middle age of Qing Dynasty(1616-1912).As one of the three great novels(the other two are "The Scholars" and "A Dream of Red Mansions ")in the period,it owns an important position in the history of Chinese classical novels,especially in the history of vernacular novels.The diversity and innovation of its subject matter,the multiplicity and complexity of its ideological content,and the breadth and depth of its skillful description of characters,which make it stands out from other famous works and eminent scholars emerging in the vernacular novel circle of the mid-Qing Dynasty.Although the ideological height and artistic achievements of "Lv Ye Xian Zong" may be not as remarkable as the super-class works such as "The Scholars"and 4iA Dream of Red Mansions ",it is indispensable in terms of its reproduction of all walks of life,its reflection on social history and its inherent literary value and artistic value.Thus it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive,systematic and in-depth research on it.The research methods of knowing both the author and his time,close reading and image analysis would be used in this paper.And on the basis of comprehensive reading,the article will analyze and explore "Lv Ye Xian Zong" from the following three perspectives:(1)The genre and theme.Exploring how the tradition of history-literature affected the author profoundly in the dimension of historical romance and how the author balanced the reality and the artistic creation;analyzing the author’s spiritual world from the perspective of the mythological novel and the highly idealized dreamland he constructed in the book;researching the conditions of society and the moral order showed in the book from the angle of realistic novels and seeking the author’s^thought at that time.(2)The ideological content.Taking the Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism as the path,and combining a comprehensive and elaborate analysis of some concrete texts and the correlative theories to explore the diversified connotation of the book,on the basic of which this dissertation studies the uniqueness and representativeness of the author’s complicated thought development and mental state,(3)Character images.Searching how the writer shaped colony and individual in "Lv Ye Xian Zong",and questing the literary and artistic value of the writing and getting further research on the social history of the time,the author’s specific creation psychology and skill through analyzing the depiction of an official colony,a scholars’ colony and ordinary townsfolk,and the most vivid individual figures respectively.
