| Frankfurt School has been deeply and comprehensively analyzing and criticizing mass culture for half a century.It is the earliest philosophical school to conduct a comprehensive and systematic study of mass culture.The school took social critical theory as its research direction at first,and then revealed the essence of mass culture on the basis of its original critical theory.As an important representative of Frankfurt School,Adorno was the first philosopher to criticize mass culture sharply.Adorno's criticism of popular culture was first seen in his book "Dialectics of Enlightenment",co-authored by Hockheimer.In Adorno's view,the cultural industrial products full of falsity and standard lead to the disappearance of individual freedom consciousness,which makes the individual lose its negativity and criticism,and then become an individual without thought and particularity.Adorno's criticism of cultural industry does not stop at "Dialectics of Enlightenment".In "Dialectics of Negation",Adorno further expounds the inherent dominance of the overflow of cultural industry,that is,the coercion of identity logic to the real society caused by instrumental rationality.Therefore,Adorno criticizes the identical thinking mode caused by instrumental rationality and proposes to break the confinement of identity by means of non-identical thinking mode.After analyzing the essence of cultural industry and the domination of its identity over the real society,Adorno proposed to redeem cultural industry with the true content and self-discipline of modern art in his book "Aesthetic Theory",and analyzed the characteristics of modern art in detail.Throughout Adorno's ideological line,he has never abandoned his criticism of cultural industry and tried to find a way to redeem it.However,through Adorno's criticism of cultural industry,we can still see the drawbacks of cultural industry in capitalist society,and we will certainly reflect on it,so it has a certain role in reflection. |
