The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017)points out that the cultivation of students' learning ability can promote the students' self-management of English learning, develop good learning habits, acquire learning resources through multiple channels, and carry out learning autonomously and efficiently. In the present study,556 students from three regular senior high schools in Duyun were selected as the subjects to conduct a survey on their English autonomous learning ability and four questions are to be answered:1.What is the overall situation of senior high school students' English autonomous learning ability?2.Are there any significant differences in students' English autonomous learning ability in terms of field of study(art-oriented and science-oriented)?3.Are there any significant differences in English autonomous learning ability for the students in different grades?4.What are the factors affecting English autonomous learning ability of senior high school students?Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were adopted as research methods.Descriptive statistics,Independent sample T-test and One-way ANOVA were used to analyze the quantitative data by SPSS,and thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the qualitative data. The results show that the English autonomous learning ability of senior high school students is generally at the middle level;there are significant differences in students' English autonomous learning ability in terms of field of study(art-oriented and science-oriented),and art-oriented students' English autonomous learning ability is higher than science-oriented students in general;there are significant differences in English autonomous learning ability for the students in different grades in general, and the higher the grade is,the higher the level is.It has found that learning interest, learning strategies, learning plans and learning environment will affect the students' English autonomous learning ability through semi-structured interviews.Accordingly, the author put forward the following suggestions for improving students' English autonomous learning ability: stimulate English learning motivation and increase the students' interest in English learning;cultivate the metacognitive strategies;create a good learning environment;and exchange English learning experiences.
