Reproducing The Atmosphere In Translation Of Suspense Novels From The Perspective Of Translation’s Inter-Subjectivity

The English version of Death Notice went on sale in America on June 8,2018 and sold in England.For a time,Chinese writer Zhou Haohui has set off a “suspense fever” in the cultural circle of Europe and America.Suspense novels have always been loved by readers in the western world,but in China,they are marginal literature,little noticed by literary circles.With the development of Chinese suspense novels,this sort of novels gradually enter vision of western readers.They come from western suspense novels,and many of them are influenced by western suspense novels.This provides a mass basis for the westward spread of Chinese suspense novels.Death Notice has been at the forefront of Amazon’s list of suspense novels since it was published abroad.It is a successful attempt for Chinese popular culture to go abroad.Suspense in the novel is one of the main reasons why foreign readers are attracted to read Death Notice.Influenced by the western suspense novels,Chinese suspense novels inherit and carry forward some features of western suspense novels,such as the image description,meticulous creation of suspense atmosphere and psychological horror description.It also makes a breakthrough in the theme of Chinese suspense novels.Zhou Haohui’s novels inherited with detail description of western suspense novels,which carefully shapes the suspense atmosphere.This is the focus of this thesis.In Death Notice,the description of scenery and the description of characters are the two main factors that shape the suspense of the novel.This thesis will be based on the translation’s inter-subjectivity theory.It analyzed how the author,translator,sponsor and reader promoted the spread of the novel in the process of translation of Death Notice.On this basis,this thesis expounded the concept of Chinese suspense novels and distinguishes them from other similar novels.Secondly,it described similarities and differences between western suspense novels and them.Finally,the author analyzed the translation methods,used in translating the details of scenery description and character description,so as to reproduce the suspense atmosphere of the original text and to achieve the same reading effect as the readers of the original text.It also provided some reference for the translation of other popular novels.By means of example analysis and descriptive analysis,this thesis compared the differences of scenery description and character image between the source text and target text,reaching the following conclusions: Death Notice is so popular abroad as it is the result of the communication of the original author,the translator,the sponsor and the reader,and each subject of translation promoted the spread of popular novels.In order to increase the exotic sentiment of the novel,the translation has added a lot of scenes with Chinese characteristics,and the translation of many person names and geography names has been changed;for the purpose of meeting the reading expectations of the target language readers and reproducing the suspense atmosphere of the original text,the translator deleted a large number of the mental activity descriptions of the characters;and in order to maintain the image and characteristics of the characters in the original text,the translator used literal translation method which made use of accurate words to translate key information.
