The Translation Report On Stone Cold Heart(Excerpts)

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the suspense novel Stone Cold Heart written by the famous American suspense novelist Laura Griffin.The novel was published by Pocket Books in March 2019.It has not yet been translated into Chinese.The novel tells a serial killing case that the murderer committed the crime by disguising himself as a car-hailing driver to gain trust.It is a highly readable novel with exquisite language description,tortuous plot and rigorous logic.In the process of translation,the translator notices that the novel is designed with a large number of environmental and psychological descriptions.And these descriptions are highly literary,which makes it harder to understand and translate the novel.Improper translation may cause obstacles in the understanding of the novel,even the phenomenon of “translationese”.Therefore,the translator focuses on the translation of the environmental and psychological descriptions in the novel,exploring how to accurately grasp the original language features and adopt the proper translation strategies to reproduce the essence of the source text as well as meet the aesthetic needs of the domestic readers.As a result,the report will provide reference and inspiration for the translation and research of suspense novel in the future.The report consists of five parts.The first part is the description of translation task,which mainly introduces the background and significance of translation project.And the information on the source text and the author are given.The second part is the translation process,including preparations before translation,translation of first draft and proofreading after translation.Difficulties in the translation are also described.The third part is the theoretical basis,which introduces the main content of“Translation Shift” theory,and briefly explains the translation strategies adopted in this report.The fourth part is the case analysis.By analyzing the application of structure,class and unit shift in the translation,the translator explores how to adopt appropriate translation strategies to translate the environmental and psychological descriptions in the novel so that the target text is more accurate and fluent.The last part is the conclusion,in which the process of translation is summarized and demerits and limitations are pointed out.
