Reading plays a more and more important role in senior English teaching in primary schools,which has a direct impact on students' language learning and academic performance.However,in the teaching practice,English teachers in primary school do not give enough attention to English reading teaching.English reading teaching is mainly to design exercises and games,most of the reading time is spent on the understanding of words,sentence patterns and grammar,ignoring the cultivation of reading interest and skills.Therefore,how to improve the reading ability of high-graders in primary school through picture book reading teaching is an urgent problem to solve in primary school English reading teaching.This study uses action research method.Action research method advocates finding problems in teaching as a research topic,which is an exploratory activity of reflection in practice.In the action research the author uses questionnaires,interviews and other forms to ascertain English reading teaching problems and relating causes,the purpose is to improve the performance of reading through picture book reading,to improve teachers' understanding of reading teaching,and at the same time,to improve students' reading ability and reading achievement.By using teaching action research method,the author conducts a teaching action research in the fifth grade of Fulongping Primary School in Lanzhou,aiming at improving students' English reading ability and promoting reading effect.The article is divided into six parts: introduction,literature review,theoretical framework,research methods and process,research data analysis and discussion,conclusion.The first part expounds the definition of picture books,the background and significance of doing this research;the second part reviews the recent studies on picture books reading;The third part introduces graphic text relation theory,this theory introduces the relationship between pictures and texts in English picture books,providing special theoretical support for the understanding of picture books.Visual narrative discourse theory has important implications for the deep understanding and interpretation of picture books,and also provides new ideas and methods for the further comprehensive study of picture book reading teaching.The fourth part mainly introduces the research method and process.The author insists on participating,improving and reflecting in the process of action research.First of all,the author uses questionnaire to confirm the problems existing in the reading teaching of students as follows: little vocabulary,lack of reading skills and insufficient reading quantity.Then,a 20-week teaching action plan is carried out.During the implementation process,the main task is to integrate reading materials and guide reading skills,then to confirm the effects of EFL teaching of picture book reading on high-graders' performance.In the process of teaching English picture book reading,three stages of action research have been carried out: the first stage is to determine students' English reading problems through questionnaires.The second stage is to formulate a research plan,and the third stage is to use various reading skills to guide and implement the teaching of picture book reading.The fifth part is data analysis and discussion;the sixth part draws a conclusion through the analysis of the results of the study.The teaching of English picture-book reading at a senior grade in primary school is based on the reading mode theory,it has played a promoting role in improving the reading ability and reading achievement of the senior students in primary school,and has reflected on the teaching action.This teaching action research uses English picture books to carry out the study on the cultivation of English reading ability of senior grade students in primary school.The study has a strong practical significance,realizes the purpose of helping teachers become researchers and solving teaching problems through teaching practice,and has a certain research value.
