Picture books,as a unique visual and literary art form,emphasize the interlacing and explanation between pictures and characters to express people and things together.It has the same functions as language narration,and assume the task of narrative lyricism and expression.Compared with pure text reading,picture books accord with the cognitive level and psychological characteristics of primary school students.It can effectively stimulate students' interest in reading and improve their reading ability and reading level.Reading is the soul of education.For English learners,reading is the main form of knowledge accumulation.With the development of primary school education,English teaching has received increased attention,teachers in primary school have paid more and more attention to English reading,they also generally recognize that English reading should be started from the lower grade.However,affected by the traditional teaching concepts and limitations of time,teaching progress and other factors,the primary school lower English reading teaching is facing multiple problems and challenges.How to improve the reading efficiency of primary school students has become a main issue in primary English teaching.The purpose of this study is to explore the application of English picture books in the reading class of primary school lower grade,and check its effect on improving students' reading ability.At the same time,the study discussed the following issues:the basic principles for English picture books teaching;the suitable strategies for English picture book reading and teaching and the effective teaching steps for English picture books teaching.On the basis of a series of teaching experiments' and questionnaires'results,this study drew some conclusions and recommendations which attempted to provide some implications and suggestions to picture books for future research.This research mainly adopted the following methodologies:interview,classroom observation,pre-test and post test,questionnaires and so on.80 students from two classes of Dongguan W primary school were chosen as subjects.And the two classes were randomly divided into the experimental class and the control classes.Before the experiment,the author did some questionnaires and individual interviews on the students'reading situation.During the experiment,different teaching experiments were carried out,including the presentation of reading materials,the teaching process and the reading strategies.To ensure the validity,the author also carried out the pre and post-test to check the effect of picture books on improving students' reading efficiency.At the end of the experiment,through the comparison and analysis of the results,this thesis came to the following conclusions:English picture book accord with the psychological characteristics and cognitive level of primary school students in lower grade,which is effective in stimulating students' reading habits and interests.With different kinds of activities students are able to have a good understanding of the reading materials as well as enjoy the process of reading.English picture book is beneficial to students' cultivation of English reading strategies.With proper teaching strategies and skills,students can form effective reading strategies by playing the main role in class.Meanwhile,as a supplement and extension of English teaching,English picture books can expand the vision of students in lower grade,and improve their reading ability by integrating with textbooks effectively.Based on this research,some suggestions concerning the application of English picture books in the reading class of primary school lower grade,the basic principles,the suitable strategies and the effective teaching steps for English picture books teaching are provided in this thesis,aiming to aid teachers in primary school to improve the quality and efficiency of English picture books teaching in reading class,and promote teachers'teaching development.
