Once upon a time,Zengjing and his "Bochen Shool" were the only portraits of Chinese painting that received much attention.They played an incredible role in the development of portraits in China.This school has greatly revigorated the development of portraits painting in late Ming Dynasty.This article will focus on the tendency of Bochen School in its portrait painting style considering whole elements of painting,status change of Zengjing,aesthetic tendency of the literati and social landscape of Late Ming.There always is a reason why Zengjing and its shool are being famous in the painting history as they are in pursuit of their individuality,however,they meet the demand of social values and markets.Therefore,the studies should take the situations at that moment into considerations.The article is divided into three parts.The first part decomposes the elements in the evolution of techniques employed by Zengjing in the works to understand the preconditions for the formation of portraiture style.We are trying to understand the development clues of this painting school from the beginning of its formation to the mature phase.This part is the key content of this article.The second part is trying to find out the social connections of Zengjing at each stage via desktop studies.The aim is to get the essential causes of this style.The last part extends the discussion to the special context of the late Ming to further clarify the forces that are shaping the "Bochen" style of painting.This article is trying to outline the development of portrait painting by Zengjing and its followers of Bochen School.The development of Bochen School has brought inspiration to portrait painting and the following development of portrait painting instead of simple reproduction of Sui and Tang.
