The study is theoretically based on the research on the Text Linguistics, applying research methods like statistics, error analysis and comparison.627 sentences of zero anaphora from 125 written texts are chosen from high-intermediate Chinese learners in the Carnegie Mellon University as the study materials. The zero-anaphora phenomenon in their texts are thoroughly studied based on the cohesion theory. On one hand,395 Chinese learners' correct uses of zero-anaphora are classified by the position of the antecedent.Antecedents in the position of subject, topic, subject modifier, object, object modifier and compound words are discussed respectively. On the other hand,232 errors are divided into lack of use and overuse of zero-anaphora.Based on this, errors are further classified into four kinds,zero-anaphora used as noun anaphora,zero-anaphora used as pronoun anaphora, noun anaphora used as zero-anaphora and pronoun anaphora used as zero-anaphora for detailed study.Reasons why Chinese learners can and cannot apply the zero anaphora are explored from three aspects.Firstly, rules for zero-anaphora are complicated.Position, order and distance between antecedent and anaphor influence the correctness of zero-anaphora.Then,the first language English has both positive and negative impact on zero-anaphora.Besides,Chinese textbooks and teaching also influence the zero-anaphora.Based on the analysis, some suggestions are made to teaching zero anaphora and develop textbooks.
