In recent years, the field of intercultural communication of China has actively responded to the call for Telling Chinese Stories Well and Enhancing the Soft Power of China. The practice to walk out to the world of Chinese traditional culture has always been advancing, but its actual effect needs to be strengthened. As the translation of Chinese traditional opera is an important part for the export of traditional culture, finding an effective translation strategy becomes an urgent task.In the field of translation of Chinese traditional opera, the focus of researches has always been lied on the translation of speech factors,or the text translation in the script.Few studies emphasize the translation of non-verbal factors.A deep connection between Chinese traditional opera and the non-verbal expression is revealed through the research. An accurate translation of non-verbal factors can more vividly reflect the cultural psychology between the lines and highlight the theme. This thesis analyzes the important role of the translation of non-verbal factors in the translation of Chinese traditional opera, and it analyzes how the nonverbal factors express the theme of the repertoire. The case study method is used to analyze the classic repertoire of Chinese traditional opera The Reunion of Mrs.Cassia's Family, translated by the famous translator Yao Shannon. In the process of the research, the literature research method is used to collect relevant material of non-verbal communication, opera translation and cultural psychology. The case study method is used to analyze the translation of the non-verbal factors in the translation of Yao's edition, including the delicate movements of the characters, the modification of speeches such as pause and silence, and some supplementary explanations.Through this way,the author gets to analyze how such details reflect the cultural psychology behind the text and what the theme is.At the same time,in consideration of personal translation experience of this repertoire, the author evaluates the feasibility of Yao Shannon's translation strategy to the non-verbal factors and then puts forward a new choice based on the current world and aesthetic situation.According to the research, the care for the translation of the non-verbal factors in Yao's translation is ample, including the introduction of characters in front of each scene, the exquisite description of the movements of characters, and the tone of the script of the characters. However, comparing the author's own translation with that of Yao,there are still some inappropriate choices such as the excessive use of naturalization in the translation of names, the addition of subj ective adj ectives in the introduction of characters and so on.These practices have cut off the reader's self-aesthetic process to some extent. Finally, the author puts forward a new choice to the translation of the nonverbal factors of Chinese traditional opera."Appropriate explanation;Clever Use of Metaphor;Naturalization for General Knowledge;Alienation for Knowledge with Chinese characteristics and A Special Care for the Modification of Speeches." Appropriate Explanation refers to adding interpretative supplementary translations moderately under the guarantee of the fluent process of plots, which can help readers to understand the plot more clearly and thus have more opportunity to understand the true Chinese traditional cultural psychology behind the plot.Clever Use of Metaphor refers to the use of metaphors or other rhetorical devices rather than subjective adjectives. In this way,the reader's continuous aesthetic flows are protected to the greatest extent and it promotes the theme of Chinese traditional opera.Naturalization for General Knowledge and Alienation for Knowledge with Chinese characteristics refers to two translation choices to two different contents in the script. One is to choose naturalization when facing the content with general or some declarative knowledge, the other is to choose alienation in the face of content with Chinese characteristics. The former option can help to stimulate the reader's freshness in their aesthetic process and indicate the attitude of China, while the latter option reduces the"language resistance" of foreign readers in understanding the plot of Chinese traditional opera, thus makes their aesthetic process smooth and natural.A Special Care for the Modification of Speeches refers to a special consideration to the modification of speeches expression, such as the pauses and silence in the speech.Because of its dynamic traits, the translation of the expression of the modification of speeches can greatly supplement the"stage presence",which is lost a lot in the text translation.Naturalization method is recommended in the translation of the modification of speeches, because content of this kind is generally only responsible for expressing emotions rather than carrying meanings.Naturalization method allows the readers to understand the progress of the story in their most familiar way so that they can accurately receive the meaning behind the text.It is also an effective way to protect the continuity of the reader's aesthetic flows. The new translation strategy of Chinese traditional opera has universal applicability in other kinds of traditional operas of China. The reason is that this translation strategy is put forward based on the non-verbal communication theory rather than that of the verbal communication. The key factor distinguishing different kinds of traditional operas is mainly the dialects, which is a verbal factor. Therefore, the difference between the operas does not affect the applicability of the translation strategy proposed in this paper. The innovative point of this thesis is that the author's research does not only re-examine the practice of the translation of Chinese traditional opera from the perspective of non-verbal communication theory, but also reflect on the value of the new translation way in the translation practice.
