Academic text translation is an important part of translation practice.Being a major tool of academic exchanges,academic text translation plays a more and more important role in the international academia.However,studies of academic text translation is quite limited and there are a lot of issues to be addressed,among which translation compensation is an important one.Considering there is a gradual increase in academic exchanges,we need to examine academic text translation in a more systematic manner.Resembling the Social:An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory is written by Bruno Latour,a French sociologist.The book provides readers with another perspective to observe the society.The report is based on the translation of the methodology part of Resembling the Social:An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory in hope of providing useful information for studies of sociology and practice in other fields.This report analyzes compensation strategies adopted in English-Chinese translation of Resembling the Social:An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory based on Xia Tingde's theory,which could be regarded as the first comprehensive and systematic translation compensation theory in China.Different from previous studies of the same kind,which mainly focuses on compensation strategies used at the language level,the report discusses the strategies adopted at the semantic,cultural and aesthetic levels.Through the analysis,the report concludes that it is suggested to adopt amplification and specification to clarify information and specify meanings;it is recommended to add annotations within text and annotations beyond text to explain complex but necessary concepts;it is advisable to create rhythms or adopt similar figures of speech in the target text or preserve the original images in the target text and add explanations in order to reproduce aesthetic effects.
