This translation project is an academic paper from Cognition,an international journal of cognitive science,named “Ways of Looking Ahead: Hierarchical Planning in Language Production”.In the paper,meticulous experiments are done to explore the ways of planning in the process of language production.For an academic paper like this one,to convey the author's logical thinking and details of the described studies are the main focus of academic translation,which is meant to be professional as well as readable to the target readers.This paper,according to Newmark's classification,is a typical text of informative function,which boasts of logical thinking,professional studies and objective words.This research report is mainly guided by the translation compensation theory.Based on the analysis of features of the text and the translation targets,compensation is mainly applied in five aspects during the translation process.The effects of translation compensation are also evaluated in the case study part combined with the analysis of some sentences.The translation skills used in the project are also summarized.This paper concludes and summarizes the common problems and suitable translation skills in academic translation.By combining the translation compensation theory with practices,the quality of academic translation is further improved and it is also helpful to expand academic horizon.In this paper,five aspects of translation compensation skills are concluded,including grammatical compensation and the compensation of terms,which are conducive to improve the quality of the translation.The skills concluded in this paper may also be helpful to solve other problems in academic translation.
