Analyzing the translation of typical words and phrases in Eight White Nights by using George Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory, this paper explains how the translator tries to transfer the features of the original adequately in order to retain the taste and flavor of the source text as much as possible. The translation of the first chapter of Eight White Nights is a good example to demonstrate the applicability of George Steiner's translation theory,or to be more specific, his four concepts of translation--trust,aggression,incorporation and restitution. With examples from the translation of the first chapter, the author of the thesis discusses how she has been inspired by the theory to do a certain level of rewriting to the original and resort to different strategies to reproduce a copy as close as possible to the original according to the four principles. The author of the thesis hopes that this report will promote the understanding of the Andre Aciman's Eight White Nights and inspire scholars in relevant field to review George Steiner's translation theory from a more practical standpoint.
