A Report On The Translation Of Queen Elizabeth From The Perspective Of George Steiner's Hermeneutic Theory

Based on the E-C translation of Queen Elizabeth,this translation report attempts to explore the translation strategies employed in translating the biography under the guidance of George Steiner's Hermeneutic Translation Theory.Unlike other literary works,the biography enjoys both historicalness and literariness,which poses a great challenge to the translator.According to George Steiner's fourfold translation motion,namely “trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”,the present author tries to achieve the unity of historicalness and literariness in her translation.Based on the “trust” of the original text,the author boldly “aggresses” into the nouns and verbs of the original text at the lexical level so as to grasp their original meanings.And then such strategies as restructuring and active-passive transformation are adopted at the sentence level to “incorporate” the original text so as to approach Chinese way of thinking and mode of expression.However,in terms of the information conveyed by the SL text in the above process,there will inevitably exist imbalance,and the translator needs to "compensate" for the whole text by addition,omission and annotation.The author of the report has come to the conclusion that George Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory is applicable to the translation of biographical texts and she hopes that this practical report can provide guidance and reference for the future translation of biographies.
