A Report On English-chinese Translation Of Lying In Wait (Excerpts)

In recent years,Sino-Western cultural exchange has been increasingly frequent,and mystery novels have been more and more popular among Chinese readers.As a branch of popular literature,mystery novels,with their unique diction and style,have posed new challenges and higher requirements to translators.This paper is based on an English to Chinese translation of the first four parts of Lying in Wait written by Liz Nugent.It is a mystery novel,which presents the different characters,social status and mental states from the perspective of different protagonists.It is full of concise expressions,suspenseful details and the ups and downs in plots and all of these make it readable.By collating and summarizing the translation,the writer finished this report.Jiri Levy's translation theory,including two important points is adopted in this report.The writer took the definitional instruction and selective instruction and the guidance of the illusion theory proposed by Levy as the theoretical guide and used several translation methods such as amplification,conversion,division,and combination from three aspects including words,sentences and dialogue to mainly analyze and sum up the problems and difficulties including the translation of character description,expression of unique language and colloquialism.Through this translation practice,on the one hand,it is concluded that Jiri Levy's translation theory enjoys strong practical significance.And on the other hand,the writer has accumulated an amount of translation experience,particularly translation skills and methods in literary translation.And this will be the guidance of her future translation work,and it is hoped to provide reference to and guidance to the translation projects of mystery novels.
