Richard Yates(1926-1992)is an American novelist. He is known as "the great writer in the age of anxiety",and at the same time he is a loyal recorder of the mainstream American life in the mid-20 th century. The novel Eleven Kinds of Loneliness is the first short story collection of American writer Richard Yates. It has gained a great response since its publication, and has been well received by the major media. It is also known as New York's Dubliners.Based on Fromm's neo-psychoanalysis,this thesis selects four stories with typical characteristics in Eleven Kinds of Loneliness.Through the analysis of the characters in the novel, the writer discovers the different situations of people, the mutual needs of people and different social characters are the causes of loneliness, which provides theoretical basis and research ideas for the future study of the theme of loneliness.Fromm's neo-psychoanalytic theory is derived from the theory of psychoanalysis, which mainly includes the human situation, human needs and social character. The human situation mainly includes the weakness and contradictoriness of human beings. The human needs mainly include the congruity and relevance of human beings. The social character mainly includes unhealthy social character orientation and mixed social character orientation. This thesis combines the three aspects of From's neo-psychoanalytic theory with the theme of loneliness.Through the interpretation of the characters of the orphans Vincent, sergent Reece,Harry and other characters in the novel, the writer tries to find the roots of their loneliness and provide some solutions to solve loneliness. This thesis consists of six chapters: The first chapter briefly introduces the writer and his work, expounds the research status of the text and the auther at home and abroad, and briefly introduces the innovation point of this thesis. The second chapter briefly introduces the theoretical framework, the emergence of neo-psychoanalysis and the content of Fromm's neo-psychoanalytic theory. At the same time,it emphasizes that Fromm's neo-psychoanalytic theory is different from the previous psychoanalytic theory. It emphasizes the feelings of ordinary people and pays more attention to the relationship between human and society. The third chapter starts from the relationship between human beings and loneliness. It also analyzes the weakness of human beings in biology and the contradiction between the life and death. The loneliness expressed is the same, although the situation is different. Finally, the reader is given some advice on solving loneliness. The fourth chapter discusses the impact of human needs on loneliness. In a society like this, everyone is an individual, but we should maintain a good relationship with the outside world, and learn to give others what they really need, and bravely pursue what we need. Finally,I give the reader some advice on how to face loneliness. The fifth chapter introduces the relationship between social character and loneliness, and emphasizes the loneliness was caused by unhealthy character orientations. Finally, the reader is called upon to develop a good social character. The sixth chapter gives a more profound summary of the full thesis. There are still some shortcomings in the analysis of the thesis, but I hope that this thesis can provide a new idea and direction for the research of this novel.
