With the rapid development of information technology,great changes have taken place in the way of getting information.People no longer rely on the words to obtain information,but also use images,colors,fonts and other modal resources to get information.This requires people to master multiliteracy.Multiliteracy refers to the ability to read multiple modal resources.The English textbook for Junior Middle schools published by Shanghai Education Press is a typical multimodal textbook,which has a variety of modal resources.Although many scholars have done multimodal discourse analysis of the textbooks,there are few investigations on the application of multimodal resources in textbooks by teachers and students.In this thesis,270 students and 24 teachers from three junior middle schools in Guangzhou are taken as the research subjects.At the same time,the thesis combines the questionnaire survey with the classroom observation to do the investigation about the visual mode resources of the Grade Seven English textbook for junior middle schools published by Shanghai Education Press.The main research questions are as follows:(1)What mulitimodal resources exist in the English textbook for junior middle schools published by Shanghai Education Press?(2)What are the perceptions of the students and teachers on the multimodal resources in the English textbook for junior middle schools published by Shanghai Education Press?(3)What is the present situation of the use of multimodal resources in the English textbook for junior middle schools published by Shanghai Education Press?As for the design of multimodal resources in the textbooks,teachers and students are quite satisfied with the design of the fonts,colors and forms in textbooks,but not very satisfied with the design of pictures.Secondly,teachers and students are not aware of the importance of multimodal resources in cultivating multiliteracy.Teachers lack clear guidance on multimodal resources in the textbooks and students' multiliteracy awareness is not strong enough.The use of multimodal resources among teachers and students is not ideal.Teachers rarely use multimodal resources in the classroom,and students rarely use multimodal resources of the textbook to learn.In the process of using multimodalresources in the textbook,teachers and students often use pictures and tables,and they less use of the fonts and colors.Therefore,teachers should increase their understanding of multiliteracy,fully realize the importance of multimodal resources in the textbooks,and combining the multimodal resources in the textbooks to design the related teaching activities.At the same time,in the use of multimodal resources,teachers should give more clear guidance for students to improve their multiliteracy.Students should improve their awareness of multiliteracy and make good use of multimodal resources in the textbooks to promote their study.Textbook writers should collocate the multimodal resources of the textbooks more reasonably,which in order to make students easy to use the multimodal resources.
