Li Sao's English translation progress has lasted nearly 140 years after its first English translated version appeared in 1879.The English version of Li Sao by Lim Boon Keng(1869-1957),a Chinese educator and social reformer, has been the first English version of Li Sao translated by Chinese scholars.Upon its publication in 1929,it attracted recognition from Chinese and foreign academic authorities at that time. The translation is characterized by various paratexts, which present the essence of the original poem and promote Chinese culture effectively. And they are of value in providing inspirations for the translation of Chinese literary classics.Based on Gerard Genette's paratext theory and with the descriptive method, this thesis makes a study on the types, content, and functions of paratexts in Lim's English version of Li Sao,trying to analyze how these paratexts help to achieve the macro-function of mediating the relationship among the original work, the translation, the translator, and the readers. This translation contains a rich variety of paratexts, among which prefaces and notes are the main bodies, each including several separated parts with complete content, delicate wording, and scientific research results.Together with other paratextual elements, they achieve four functions:shaping the image of Chu Yuan and highlighting the status of the original work;reflecting the translated features and translator's thinking;facilitating readers'understanding and acceptance;promoting Confucianism and Chinese culture.
