This thesis intends to start from the traditional western humor theory to study the relationship between Lao She's humor and Dickens' s humor, focusing on how the two, especially Lao She,create humor in the novel creation, and the inherent influence of such design on the text as a whole. The relationship between Lao She and Dickens has more research in the academic circles, but most of the current impact studies only stay on Dickens' influence on the external form of Lao She's novel story construction, and there is no more theoretical explanation for the generation of humor. Therefore, this article wants to use the traditional humor theory to further analyze how the author generates humor in the way of creation, and how such humor has formed on the text. Here is a brief introduction to the specific content of this article:The first chapter is to explain the research objects involved in this paper and the theory involved. It is mainly divided into two parts. The first part traces the word“humor” and leads to the study of humor in the West and the humorous tradition of China since ancient times. At that time, the West had some research on the generation of humor and the expression of humor, and had a humor theory that was recognized by the academic circles. Therefore, this chapter briefly introduces the traditional humor theory in the West. However, for China, there is a lack of more detailed humor theory,so it is analyzed in the ancient Chinese humor tradition hidden in the text, which of course has similarities with Western humor theory. The second part explains the relationship between Lao She and humor and Dickens.Lao She chose to write humorously on the one hand because of his own and national culture,on the one hand because of the influence of Dickens' works. The second chapter mainly combines humor theory with text to explain the ways and techniques of generating humor in the author's creation. It is divided into the following sections: The first section is to analyze the text from the aspect of novel characters,to use the paradox in humor theory as the tool to penetrate the text, and the superiority is the side extension to analyze the author's skill in shaping humorous characters.Characters that are different from normal and tend to exaggerate can make the characters of the novel more comical, which leads to humor. The second section analyzes the humorous techniques used by the author from the plot and language aspects of the text. This chapter is more about the use of public opinion to unify the text of the novel, find out how the author creates humor from disharmony, and naturally integrate it into the construction of the plot. The humor of the plot and language itself is also serving thecharacters, which highlights the inherent qualities of the characters set by the author at the beginning of the novel. The third chapter explores the differences in the different humor traits produced by the same humorous techniques, including the author's attitude towards reality.Although the artistic styles of the two writers are the same, the same technique can produce different humor.Lao She's humor tends to be more of a helpless self-deprecating humor. For Dickens, the author's intention to use humor as a reader to dispel the cruelty of reality is an optimistic humanitarian.
