At the end of the 19 th century, there was a musical change that constantly weakened and eventually completely disintegrated the tonal system. This prompted some composers in the early 20 th century to find a new way to replace the functional pitch structure. In 1923,Schoenberg founded the mature and complete twelve-tone composition technique(the twelve-tone system),which marked a crucial step in the history of modern music creation. In the following years, this new composition technique was introduced into China by people of insight in the “music industry” and many scholars who returned from overseas, and thus in the following half a century, there were ups and downs of developments of the twelve-tone composition in China.Until the 11 th Third Plenary Session of the Communist Party of China unveiled the prelude of reform and opening up,Chinese composers and theorists officially began research on the techniques of the twelve-tone composition and triggered the boom of the serial music in China during 1980s-1990 s.Tonality is the only basic principle in music creation during the generality-composing period. The tonal center or the tonic(leading tone)plays an indispensable role in mus ical structure. The basic principles of tonality were gradually dis integrated in late romanticism, which led to the fact that all the styles of modern music from the beginning of the 20 th century were quite different from those of the past, and in some places it could even be said to be completely opposite. With the change of the characteristics of modern music style, the concept of "tonality " is gradually changing. It will change with the changes in the style, technique, concept and logic of composers' works of different periods. It can be said that since the 20 th century, the most striking feature of the development of "tonality" thinking is the diversified development of the concept of “tonality",and it is also presented in various ways in modern music. This paper first explains the tonality and related concepts involved in the article, and summarizes the historical process of serial music since its entry into China until the 1980 s.Then, the sequence music works created by Chinese composers in the 1980 s and 1990 s were taken as the research objects.According to the different modes of "tonality" in each work, they were divided into four categories: "tonality" thinking,"atonity" thinking,“tonality” collective thinking and “tonality” central migration thinking, detailed analysis carried out in each.On the basis of explor ing the unique composition techniques of each composers, this paper is aimed at looking for a “Chinese-style music language” that expresses the characteristics of Chinese style running through all the serial music works. Finally,on this basis, this paper seeks to reveal the influence of serial music composition on the development of modern Chinese music theory, and further to think deeply on the questions arising from related research.
